Key Standards#

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)#

  • GTIN-12: UPC-A (North America)
  • GTIN-13: EAN-13 (International)
  • GTIN-14: Case/carton codes
  • GTIN-8: EAN-8 (small packages)

GLN (Global Location Number)#

  • Identifies physical locations
  • Warehouses, stores, docks
  • 13-digit number
  • EAN-13 barcode format

SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code)#

  • Logistics unit identification
  • 18-digit number

Getting Started with GS1#

1. Join GS1#

  • Contact your national GS1 office
  • Apply for membership
  • Receive company prefix
  • Access training resources

2. Company Prefix#

  • Unique identifier for your company
  • Length varies by capacity needs
  • Forms basis of all GTINs
  • Cannot be transferred/sold

3. Assign Numbers#

  • Create GTINs for products
  • Calculate check digits
  • Register in GS1 database
  • Maintain records

Size Specifications#

  • Minimum: 80% of nominal
  • Maximum: 200% of nominal
  • X-dimension: 0.0104" minimum
  • Quiet zones: Required on all sides

Quality Standards#

  • Grade A: Best quality
  • Grade B: Good quality
  • Grade C: Acceptable
  • Grade D: Poor (may not scan)
  • Grade F: Fail
  • Minimum 300 DPI
  • Sharp edges required
  • No voids or spots
  • Consistent bar width
